Priestly Formation

Are You Called?

Listen to our seminarians discuss their paths to the Seminary.

When you come to Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, you don't need to have all the answers about whether to become a priest. Let us help you discern your call.

We are eager to talk with you. Please contact us if you are wondering about vocations, or visit thinkpriest.org for additional vocations resources.

Program of Priestly Formation

Candidates preparing for the priesthood pursue a program of formation and graduate theological studies. These men receive a Master of Divinity degree and, God-willing, ordination.

A propaedeutic stage, up to two years of pre-theological studies, and a pastoral year may be required in addition to four years of theological studies. Seminarians reside on the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary campus and participate in a formation program specific to the demands of ordained ministry. It is a program rooted in the human, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual dimensions of priestly formation as outlined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in the Program of Priestly Formation. Formation sessions at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary take place each Wednesday, and academic courses are held four days a week at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.

College Program

Some young men want to begin their discernment while still in college. Seminarians in Saint Francis de Sales Seminary college program attend Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minnesota. Graduates obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy.
