Seminarian

Priestly Formation

Are you called?

Listen to our seminarian, Nick Baumgardner, discuss his path to the Seminary.

When you come to Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, you don't need to have all the answers about whether to become a priest. Let us help you discern your call.

We are eager to talk with you. Please contact us if you are wondering about vocations, or visit www.thinkpriest.org for additional vocations resources.

Program of Priestly Formation

Candidates preparing for the priesthood pursue a four-year course of graduate study leading to a Master of Divinity degree and, ultimately, ordination.  An additional year or more of pre-theological study may be required of seminarians needing the appropriate philosophical studies.  A year of internship is an option that may be required of some seminarians as well.

Priesthood candidates reside on the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary campus and participate in a formation program specific to the demands of ordained ministry, as outlined by the USCCB in the Program for Priestly Formation (fifth edition) including the four aspects of priestly formation:  human, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual.

College Program

Some young men want to begin their discernment while still in college. Seminarians in the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary college program attend St. Joseph College Seminary in Chicago. Graduates obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy.
